The case of Eugert Merizaj has caused strong reactions in Britain, after it was revealed that he profited around 20 thousand pounds from a 'Live' on TikTok, made from inside his cell in a Manchester prison.
According to reports, Merizaj managed to secure this amount in just seven minutes, using a cell phone illegally brought into the prison premises. He participated in a “match” on TikTok, a format where two users broadcast simultaneously and encourage followers to send virtual gifts.
These gifts are paid for by users and converted into points, with the winner being the one who collects the most points, which are then converted into money. During the broadcast, Merizaj is heard calling on followers to send more gifts and share the video to increase viewership, while reading out the names of contributors.
Merizaj used several TikTok accounts, with the main one having over 45,000 followers. This allowed him to accumulate a total of 5,429,625 points, with an estimated value of around £20,000. It is suspected that the proceeds were deposited into the bank account of a friend of his outside prison.
In other live broadcasts, Merizaj appears smoking a cigarette and wearing signature clothes. In a communication with followers, he proudly states that the authorities cannot deport him to Albania without his signature.
Merizaj was sentenced in 2022 to 32 years in prison for the murder of Hemawand Ali Hussein, who was shot dead at close range inside a flat in Hartlepool in 2019.
“The Sun ” writes that under rules adopted last year in the United Kingdom, foreign nationals convicted of criminal offences are expected to be deported after serving part of their sentence. However, in November last year, the Fier Court recognized the British court’s decision and agreed that Merizaj should serve his sentence in Albania. He is expected to be transferred to Peqin prison, after the time he has served in the United Kingdom is deducted.
Regarding this case, opposition politician Nick Timothy reacted by stating that the justice system must protect citizens and punish criminals, emphasizing that such situations should not be tolerated.
After reporting the case, TikTok announced that it had blocked all accounts used by Merizaj and suspended the ability to withdraw funds.
On the other hand, a representative of the British Ministry of Justice told "The Sun" that the behavior is completely unacceptable, that the content has been removed immediately and that an urgent investigation has been launched, warning of additional measures to prevent illegal items from entering prisons.
