Beyond the scenes of clashes that have already made the rounds of the world, a scandal that was discovered by journalists and could take on other dimensions, was the fact that the tear gas that was thrown at the crowd was expired. The canisters that were found on the streets and sidewalks say that the gas was manufactured in 2019, while the expiration date is 3 years ago, 2023...

The Democratic Party and its allies organized a protest on Saturday afternoon, which started on the “Deshmorët e Kombit” boulevard in front of the Prime Minister’s Office and ended at the Parliament building. The protest recorded a series of incidents, which began with the throwing of Molotov cocktails and fireworks towards the government building, while the police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowds.

The most numerous clashes were recorded at Parliament, where the police detained some protesters, but used even greater amounts of gas and pressurized water, justifying this as a response to attacks by protesters who threw stones and umbrellas at the blue uniforms.

The situation escalated, as special police forces attempted to enter the courtyard of the DP headquarters, but were stopped by a group of MPs who blocked the machine used for spraying water with pressure.

The entire scene lasted no more than 3 hours, from the moment the protest started until its closure, while the police announced the arrest of 18 protesters and the placing under investigation of several Democratic MPs and officials, accusing them of having forcibly opposed the police actions.

Several dozen tear gas canisters were fired by the police at the protesters, while there was no official number of citizens injured, while on the other hand the authorities stated that 11 police officers were injured, some from Molotov cocktails and others from hard objects (mainly stones) that were thrown at them.

Beyond the scenes of clashes that have already made the rounds of the world, a scandal that was uncovered by journalists and could take on other dimensions, was the fact that the tear gas that was thrown at the crowd was expired. The canisters found on the streets and sidewalks state that the gas was manufactured in 2019, while the expiration date is 3 years earlier, in 2023.

And the use of gas, in this specific case expired, is included in the plan of measures that the police drafts and implements whenever there are protests, which is approved by its leader, in this specific case the Director General of Police, Ilir Proda.

The opposition rushed to declare that this constitutes a crime, but it is not known whether its representatives will file criminal charges against the blue uniforms, first for the "disproportionate response" to the protesters, as alleged, but also for the fact that the grenades that were thrown at the protesters were expired.

A simple search is enough to understand that this type of gas, used beyond its expiration date, creates many more problems than gas used for the same purposes, but within its expiration date.

First, over time, the chemical components of tear gas degrade and can create more irritating or toxic substances. As a result, the consequences are: more severe irritation of the eyes, skin and lungs, increased risk of breathing difficulties, severe coughing, eye/skin burns, dizziness or nausea. But it also poses a risk to the users, that is, the forces that use it, in this case the police, against the protesters. An expired canister can leak or explode, which can become a “danger” for the police forces themselves.

It is not known whether this scandal will be investigated, either by the AMP (Police Supervision Agency) or by the Prosecutor's Office, which hastily landed on Saturday evening at two locations: the Prime Minister's Office and the area around the Albanian Parliament.

Investigative groups are said to have collected evidence regarding what they consider an attack on the police, but it is not known whether the evidence includes the bombs that were thrown en masse at the protesters and that, according to technical specifications, should have been inoperative and not used against crowds, especially in the center of the capital. /Pamphlet/
