Corfu was shaken in the early hours of this morning by a powerful 4.7 magnitude earthquake. The strong tremors were also felt in the south of the country, Saranda, Himare and the surrounding areas.
Seismologist Edmond Dushi, in a Skype connection for "Breaking" on Top News, said that we are dealing with increased tectonic activity near the island of Corfu.
He added that it is noticeable that in the last week there has been an increase in activity at both ends of the Adriatic tectonic plate, starting with the earthquakes in Bosnia, Italy and Corfu.
"We have an increased activity, near the island of Corfu, on the border with the Ionian Sea, it is a contact with the boundary of the tectonic plates, with the southern part of the Adriatic plate. It is noted that in the last week we have an increase in activity at both ends of the Adriatic plate, starting with the earthquakes in Bosnia, Italy and Corfu. It follows that of Montenegro. Today's was 4.7 on the Richter scale. As for the size, we see that the size of moderate earthquakes has increased and that shows a clear expression of the seismic activity in our region and related to the geodynamic activity of the Adriatic plate", he said.
