While Ivanka Trump is in Vlora to discuss strategic investments on the Albanian coast, the daily reality for citizens is quite different. A powerful pipeline explosion has flooded the city's main boulevard, exposing the infrastructure crisis that for the second time in a few weeks leaves the city without water.
At around 18:00, a 500 cm diameter pipe burst, spilling large amounts of water from the city's reservoir on "Ismail Qemali" Street. The incident occurred at the exact moment when the water supply system was fully operational for the needs of residents.
According to the Vlora Water and Sewerage Authority, the cause of the incident was related to the works being carried out by a private company for the construction of a public facility, near the area where the main line passes. The authorities announced immediate interventions to repair the defect and assured that there will be no long interruption of the water supply. However, images from the scene show a significant flood that has made it difficult for citizens and vehicles to move around the city center.
This incident comes just a few weeks after Vlora was without water for several days due to other problems in the network. The situation has brought to the fore the need for sustainable investments in the water infrastructure of the city, which has undergone significant urban growth, but without following the appropriate pace in basic services.
