Journalist Aida Topalli recounted the judge's last words before entering the courtroom, where he was shot as soon as he delivered the verdict in the Shkambi family case.
According to her, before the session began, the judge had told several colleagues he had met that there was a trial with problems.
The journalist said that in the session on September 24, there were heated debates between Gjon Shkambi and the panel of three judges, headed by the late Astrit Kalaja.
"In the session on the 24th, there were high-pitched voices among the judges of the case, where the three-judge panel was chaired by Astrit Kalaja. In that session, there were heated debates between Gjon Shkambi and the deceased. Even yesterday, before entering the courtroom, Astrit Kalaja had told the colleagues he had met that "today I have a trial with problems", being aware of the history of the case and the aggressiveness of the party, since he was from Shkodra himself and knew the situation well. He had expressed this concern in a way, but had not requested support services or protective measures. It is not normal that the Court of Appeal - the most important court in the country - does not have even the minimum level of security, in the middle of the city. A court where anyone can enter and exit should have a much higher level of security," the journalist told "Euronews".
We recall that Judge Astrit Kalaja was shot dead on Monday in the courtroom by Elvis Shkambi, while father and son, Rakip and Ervis Kurtaj, parties to the case with the Shkambi family, were injured.
