Between 2020 and 2024, 10 percent of 9-year public schools across the country were closed, while the number of students in this education cycle decreased by 14 percent in the same period.
Across the country in 2024 there were 1127 9-year cycle schools, or 104 schools fewer than in 2020.
INSTAT data by region shows that Kukës holds the national record with the closure of 22% of 9-year schools in the entire region, followed by Gjirokastra and Korça -16 and -15% each.
The trend is also more pronounced in the regions of Lezha, Shkodra and Elbasan with a contraction of around 14%.
On the other hand, Tirana remains the most stable area, where the number of schools in the 9-year cycle has increased by three from 2020 to 2024, reflecting demographic growth and population concentration in the capital.
Vlora also has a low percentage, with 5.3% closures, while Durrës had the same number of schools in 2024 as in 2020.
During the period 2020–2024, the number of students in 9-year education has decreased by 36.8 thousand students or -14.2%.
Fier and Elbasan are among the most affected regions in terms of numbers, with less than 10 thousand students together. Meanwhile, Korça and Dibra also report significant shrinkage, with over 3 thousand students less each. Even Kukës, one of the regions with the highest emigration, has a shrinkage of over 1,400 students and 12 schools in just four years. While in percentage terms, we had the largest shrinkage of students in Dibra with 28.6%, Berat with 25.7% and Fier with 24%.
Tirana is not excluded from the decline in the number of students, which in 2024 had about 3 thousand fewer students than in 2020, a contraction of 3.5%.
In total, the education network has shrunk and the number of students has decreased, while the number of teachers has increased by over 2,100, which is related to the reorganization of staff and the relocation of human resources to urban areas.
While the number of schools and students has declined sharply in the last four years, spending on education is increasing. But higher spending for the same number of students is not translating into quality, as global PISA testing for 15-year-old Albanians has confirmed a sharp decline in knowledge over the period 2028-2022./ Monitor
