"Unsafe Justice"/ The Murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja Echoes in

The judge of the Court of Appeal in Tirana, Astrit Kalaja, was shot dead in the courtroom, shortly after articulating a decision regarding a property case that was under trial.

The attack is considered one of the most serious incidents to have occurred against justice workers, who are often the subject of attacks and accusations by politicians.

The event in question has resonated in the international media, where the most prestigious news agencies have covered the crime.

From AFP to CNN and beyond, all media outlets have published details of the event.

"Unsafe justice," writes one of the international media outlets, referring to the murder of Judge Kalaja.

Police arrested the suspected perpetrator of the crime, Elvis Shkëmbim, a 30-year-old man, who was arrested on the court premises, a few minutes after the crime.

He was one of the parties in the trial tried by Judge Kalaja.

The murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja in the courtroom marks the first case in Albania of the execution of a member of the black squads inside the court premises. Kalaja is the second magistrate to be killed in an attack, while Skerdilajd Konomi, a former judge in Vlora, was executed more than two decades ago in a mafia assassination attempt after a large amount of TNT was placed in his car.
