Today at 10:00, a hearing will be held at the Special Court of Appeal to review the appeal against the "prison arrest" measure made by the leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta.
Meta's defense attorney, Kujtim Çakrani, filed a request with the GJKKO to overturn the decision given by the judge in the case, Erjon Çela, who refused to replace the security measure of "prison arrest" with another, lighter security measure.
Çela argued his decision that Meta, due to his position in the party, could intimidate witnesses in the case from within the PL and could influence the continuation of the investigation.
The request filed by the former president's defense states that the risk of evidence being tampered with is an alibi rather than a correct justification, saying that with the closure of the investigations, 'poisoning of evidence' is impossible. Meanwhile, Meta considers the argument that it could intimidate witnesses as a fallacy, because according to him, 'the witnesses have given their testimonies and they are reflected in the decision to close the investigations'.
The former president is accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets, for matters related to the LSI lobbying file in the US and the CEZ-DIA affair. He was arrested on October 21, 2024 and has been in pre-trial detention since then.
