The Appeals Court of Kosovo will review on February 24 the request of Mayor Erion Veliaj for the change of the security measure "prison arrest". Judge Nertina Kosova will review the request of Veliaj, who has been in prison since February 10, 2025, by decision of the judiciary, following the request of SPAK.
Veliaj has requested several times to change the security measure, while recently the GJKKO decided that the SPAK file against him and other persons involved in the case should go to trial.
The lawyers for the Mayor of Tirana argue that the fact that the file has gone to trial refutes SPAK's claims about the existence of tampering, manipulation of evidence, or pressure on witnesses that the prosecution may have had.
Veliaj waged a strong battle in the Constitutional Court where he managed to overturn the scheme initiated by Prime Minister Edi Rama to dismiss the mayor of Tirana. The Constitutional Court granted Veliaj the right to continue in office, overturning the Government's decision to dismiss him from office.
SPAK has filed 13 charges against Veliaj, 9 of which are related to corruption. SPAK has also filed charges against the Mayor of Tirana for money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office, and bringing items into prison.
