The scandal that "Pamphlet" warned about is confirmed, Eni Vasili is
Eni Vasili elected director of RTSH

Journalist Eni Vasili, the pre-selected candidate that 'Pamfleti' had announced for days, was elected today as the new director of Albanian Radio Television.

The Steering Council fell "on its knees" before politics and voted today with 7 votes in favor of Eni Vasili at the head of public television.

This was the second round, as the first round failed because none of the candidates received 7 votes or 3/5 of the votes.

In this round, only the 3 most voted candidates, Jakaj, Musai and Vasili, were in the race. Only 3 votes went to Zoje Jakaj and 1 vote to candidate Engjëllush Musai.

It was Vasili who received the support of 7 votes from the RTSH Steering Council.

The RTSH Steering Council, which on paper should have been the body that decides on the direction of the public media, was dissolved and built from scratch by a decision of the Assembly, at a time when the process of selecting the general director was in progress.

This move, coordinated by the majority, occurred suddenly, with the reasoning that the council was dysfunctional or had completed its mandate.

In reality, what happened was the "clearing of the ground" for the appointment of Eni Vasili, who was seen as the "preferred candidate" and 'appointed from above' to lead RTSH.

After the collapse of the council, a new Council was established, which formalized the election of Eni Vasili, making it a fait accompli.

Based on the RTSH statute, Vasili is expected to serve for the next 5 years.

Controversies at RTSH until the election of Vasili

RTSH has been at the center of public debate for more than a year, after former director Alfred Peza resigned in June of last year, after facing criticism for mass dismissals of journalists and employees of this institution during the year he held the position.

The process of selecting his successor was strongly contested by the two major political parties, which, through the Parliamentary Committee on Media and Education, took the unprecedented act of dissolving the Steering Council in March of this year.

Parliament then voted on the composition of the new Governing Council, electing individuals closely connected to politics to this institution, which concerned organizations that protect media freedom and, more recently, the European Union.

Fatjon Hoxhalli, 38 years old, with nearly a decade of work experience as a close advisor to Niko Peleshi during his duties in the executive and as chairman of the socialist parliamentary group, was voted chairman of this council.

The 10-member board also includes the advisor to the former socialist minister, Bledi Çuçi, a former deputy minister in the "Rama" government, and names who come from the field of art or journalism, but who have a political background or closeness to the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party.

RTSH is the only public operator in the country and, based on legal provisions and media freedom standards, should be independent from politics, standards which have been completely violated with the recent election of the members of the Steering Council./ Pamphlet
