Living costs are rising especially for families with children in Albania, while single individuals face the pressure of daily inflation, but with a lower level of spending.
For the period 2021–2023, families with more adults and children spend significantly more, according to the INSTAT report, while individuals living alone have the lowest expenses.
In 2021, a single person spent an average of 46,815 lek per month, while a family with three or more adults and children spent 98,795 lek. Families with two adults and children had an expenditure level of 87,439 lek, while two adults without children spent 63,557 lek. The total average for all family typologies was 84,548 lek.
The following years showed significant changes. In 2022, spending by single individuals remained relatively stable (46,660 lekë), but families with children saw a significant increase: two adults with children spent 92,889 lekë, while three or more adults with children reached 104,177 lekë. The overall average increased to 88,367 lekë.
In 2023, the changes were even more pronounced for single individuals, who increased their expenses to 55,940 lek, while larger families continued to maintain high expenses: three or more adults with children spent 109,671 lek. The total average for all typologies increased to 91,675 lek.
Albanian family spending has changed significantly over the years 2021–2023, a period characterized by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising food and energy prices, and changes in the labor market. The data shows that how much a family or individual spends each month depends not only on income, but also on the family structure: larger families with children face higher expenses for food, education, transportation, and other services, while single individuals spend less, but the rising cost of living affects them too./Monitor
