Internet crisis/ Cloudflare goes down in Europe, major websites out of service

A significant portion of websites in Europe are experiencing operational problems due to a network fault at Cloudflare, one of the largest security and content delivery companies on the Internet. According to the official announcement published on Cloudflare's system monitoring page, the company has confirmed that it is currently investigating significant network performance issues in several European locations, adding that it is working to analyze and mitigate this fault.

The issue was officially reported on August 4, 2025, at 10:01 AM, and has been classified as a high-impact incident. This means that a large number of websites, including major media portals, social platforms, public service websites, and government institutions, have experienced outages or serious slowdowns in performance.

In the latest update, Cloudflare confirms that the source of the problem has been identified and is linked to the data center in Frankfurt, one of the strategic points for distributing traffic in Europe. The official statement reads:

“Cloudflare has identified that the issue primarily affects our Frankfurt data centers. The issue has been identified and a fix is currently being implemented.”

Cloudflare is one of the most critical links in the global Internet infrastructure. It provides services such as DDoS protection, content delivery network (CDN), intelligent firewall, and high-performance DNS. Over 80 percent of the world's major websites use Cloudflare to ensure the security and stability of their systems. For this reason, a failure in Cloudflare causes ripple effects throughout the Internet, causing many websites to go down simultaneously, without necessarily being a problem on their local servers.

Outages have been widely reported in several European countries, while in Albania there are partial reports of malfunctioning of several media sites, commercial portals, and technology platforms that use Cloudflare's infrastructure for secure and fast access.

The impact of these problems is not just technical. If a company like Cloudflare were to face a sophisticated attack or a deeper flaw, the consequences could be severe for sectors such as finance, e-government, media, and digital commerce.

Cloudflare said it will release additional updates in the coming hours, while technical teams are working to restore network stability in the affected areas. Until then, users should be prepared for temporary disruptions in access to sites, as well as reduced speeds in loading web content.

This incident is a stark reminder that the modern internet, while seemingly decentralized, depends on a few strategic nodes, where a single failure can produce a massive disruption in digital communication. Albania, like many other countries, is part of this chain and should begin to consider strategies for diversifying its digital infrastructure and providing backup capacity to protect critical networks.
