Four poisonings, no one responsible! "Sori-Al" escapes the blockade again
For the second time in a few weeks, the catering company "Sori-Al" comes out "clean" from laboratory tests, while dozens of students from the Security Academy end up in the hospital with signs of poisoning. The paradox remains the same: if the food is within the norms and the hygienic-sanitary conditions are in order, then who poisoned the students?
The National Food Authority has decided to unblock the activity of the "Sori-Al" company, after the analyzes conducted at the Food Safety and Veterinary Institute (ISUV) resulted in compliance with food safety standards.
According to the AKU, a total of 33 food samples and hygienic swabs were analyzed, while the company then conducted self-control analyses for the premises, equipment and employees. Repeated checks carried out on July 10 also resulted, according to the institution, within the norms, leading to the lifting of the suspension measure and the resumption of activity in the kitchen of the "Skënderbej" Garrison.
"Following the follow-up of the issue at the "Sori-Al" entity at the address of the Armed Forces Academy, "Skenderbej" Garrison, for which a measure of activity interruption was taken, the Sori-al entity has conducted environmental buffer self-control analyses of the premises, equipment and employees, which have been found to comply with legal requirements.
On 10.7.2026, after notifying the subject of the results of the self-control analyses, the AKU conducted an inspection at the address of the Armed Forces Academy, Garrison "Skenderbej", during which it again took 3 environmental buffer samples, which were sent for analysis to the ISUV laboratory.
With the release of the results of the analyses conforming to the hygiene and food safety conditions, for the official control samples sampled on 25.06.2026 and the samples taken on 10.07.2026 at the "Sori-Al" entity at the address of the Armed Forces Academy, "Skenderbej" Garrison, the AKU has unblocked the activity of the "Sori-Al" entity and the OBU is allowed to continue exercising the activity of cooking food in the kitchen premises located within the premises of the "Skenderbej" Garrison, "the AKU states.
But the decision raises again the same question that was raised after the first case: how is it possible that dozens of students end up in the hospital, while the tests all come out "conform"?
The poisoning of 64 students in June was not an isolated episode. Just a month earlier, in May, 52 students from the Security Academy presented with the same symptoms, while suspicions fell on the same company. Even then, the activity of "Sori-Al" was temporarily blocked, but the suspension lasted only a few days and the company resumed work.
The story, however, goes much further back in time.
On May 18, 2015, 63 students at the Police Academy were poisoned after consuming food supplied by the same company. Six years later, on March 3, 2021, 30 more students ended up in the hospital in another similar episode. On May 6, 2026, a third case was recorded, when 56 students were again poisoned. A few weeks later, a fourth case came, with 64 more students.
In all four episodes, the food was supplied by the "Sori-Al" company.
However, the company has continued its activity and public contracts. According to official data, by the end of 2025, "Sori-Al" had won 75 public tenders, with a total value of 4.2 billion lek.
Even after the latest poisoning, the investigation did not touch the company as a whole. The police arrested chef Kujtim Ballgjini and food technologist Kristjana Plaka, while administrator Alma Tafani was declared wanted. However, after the release of laboratory tests, the AKU decided to lift the block on the entity and allow it to resume activity.
"Sori-Al" is the company that provides catering for the Security Academy, but its contracts also extend to other public institutions, including kindergartens and nurseries.
As the company's activity is once again unblocked, the question that has accompanied all episodes of poisoning over the years still remains unanswered: if the food and hygienic conditions are always up to standard, then what is it that constantly sends students to the hospital?
