The freedom of Sanxhatari sinks the government's amnesty and overthrows Toni Gogu's rhetoric...
When the Assembly approved the criminal amnesty, Justice Minister Toni Gogu guaranteed that no one who posed a danger to society would benefit. He presented the law as a mechanism that would separate convicts who had fulfilled the purpose of their sentence from those who continued to be dangerous.
But today it can be said with full confidence that the amnesty has been used to release dangerous figures from the criminal world. Yesterday, over 300 people convicted of minor crimes were released from prison, but the name of the key figure who was released was kept secret.
According to sources, Sokol Sanxhaktari, convicted of murder, a character known for years for his clashes with justice and constantly mentioned in the criminal chronicle of Elbasan, has been released from Reç prison.
The Sanxhaktari was released from prison after receiving a reduced sentence under this government's criminal amnesty. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of Florian Lamçe, a sentence that was reduced to 10 years in prison after a shortened trial.
In presenting the law, Minister Toni Gogu stated that the amnesty would not benefit persons associated with organized crime, corruption, terrorism, trafficking, money laundering or other high-risk offenses, emphasizing that: "This is not a law to forget crime. It is a law to distinguish, with legal precision and social responsibility, between those who continue to pose a danger to society and those for whom the state assesses that the purpose of the punishment has been achieved."
However, the release of Sanxhatari tarnishes the amnesty, as it concerns a name whose history with justice does not begin with the murder of Florian Lamçe.
His criminal record stretches back more than a decade. In 2008, he was convicted of resisting police. In 2010, he received three years in prison for assault and illegal possession of a weapon. He was then investigated for the assaults of Miklajd Llatja and Erion Kardhoshi, a case that was dropped after witnesses withdrew their statements.
One of the most famous episodes is related to March 2011, when the police attempted to arrest him near the "Shtëpia e Artit Sejko" bar in Elbasan. At that moment, Sanxhaktari was together with other characters from the criminal world. The operation degenerated into a physical clash, while Sanxhaktari managed to escape and remained on the run for about six months.
In the end, he was convicted only of illegal possession of a weapon, while the charges of resisting police were dropped in court.
The incident for which he was sentenced to prison occurred in July 2020. It was initially said that during a conflict in a bar in Elbasan, Sanxhaktari and Adriano Hajdari hit Florian Lamçe with bottles, chairs and hard objects, causing injuries that proved fatal.
But, according to the court file and environmental wiretaps, Lamçe was tortured to death by Sanxhatari, after he was suspected of having stolen 10 million euros from "Rozafa City", owned by oligarch Gjergj Luca. It is even said that Luca had promised Sanxhatari half of the amount if he found and returned the money. But, while Gjergj Luca was never investigated, now Sanxhatari is also out of prison.
Beyond the criminal records, Sanxhaktari has been constantly in the spotlight due to his family ties to the former socialist mayor of Elbasan, Qazim Sejdini, as he is his son-in-law.
According to the data, he was the 123rd on the list of amnesty beneficiaries. He had previously received a 90-day reduction in sentence, while his request for conditional release was rejected by the court.
His release brings back to the center of the debate the very question that accompanied the approval of the criminal amnesty: is the law being applied only to low-risk individuals, as the government promised, or are names with long criminal histories and convictions for serious crimes, such as murder, also being included in the list of beneficiaries? / Pamphlet
