Pedagogue and theologian Thoma Çomeni has spoken about what will be decided now after the loss of life of Archbishop Anastasios Janullatos, regarding the Leadership of the Autocephalous Church.
He has provided an explanation regarding how the process will proceed and emphasizes that it is the Synod that will determine the candidate for this leadership by majority vote.
" First, we expect 40 days to pass before the procedure begins. The church statute has decided that he will be elected by the Synod. One of the candidates is Bishop Joan, who is present due to his seniority and experience in the church. In the end, the decision remains from the Synod. He makes a proper vote.
As for the candidacies, everyone who has the rank of bishop is a potential candidate. If we talk about how many such candidates we have in total, we have 5 metropolises: Korça, Gjirokastra, Fieri, Elbasan, Berat, we also have two others who are auxiliary bishops. So there are 7 candidacies.
"There is a condition in the statute that requires the candidate to have spent the last 3 years in Albania and to have Albanian citizenship. Everything will work by majority vote ," said theologian Thoma Çomeni on the "Revieë" show.
He added that the election of Archbishop Anastasios was an exceptional case, because they had a frozen Autocephaly. The circumstances were incomparable to this time.
Çomeni also said that the Synod is a genuine process accompanied by prayer and has the solemnity of all faith.
