The Deputy Chairman of the Security Commission, Xhemal Qefalia, revealed that a legal initiative could be undertaken in the future that would pave the way for the return of compulsory military service in Albania.
An element that stands out, according to the SP MP, in increasing defense capacities is not only the revitalization of military plants, but also the strengthening of the Armed Forces.
According to Kefalia, this would be very well achieved through compulsory military service for a period of 3 to 6 months, as has begun to be applied in Serbia, following a government decision signed last summer.
" The attention to defense is a very positive thing and this is also being concretized by Albania. Those factories that were closed many years ago will be functional not only for the needs of the Albanian army, but also for export. And one thing that is again here is the way of organizing military service. My personal opinion is that there should be a short period of compulsory military service, as many countries have established, based on not only regional but also territorial security of Albania. We have approved the law on reservists. It creates the possibility that within a period of 45 days a year, citizens can be invited against payment to be part of the Armed Forces. But, why not also go through a short period of 3 to 6 months of compulsory military service, it would be very good. Personally, I would be very willing to propose it, if I had the opinion of my colleagues in the SP group, as this would serve national security as a whole ," Qefalia said on "Off the Record" by Andrea Danglli on A2 CNN.
