Funding has been canceled related to activities to help Albania's public sector improve financial controls, prevent corruption through better contract enforcement and increase accountability.

The list of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) projects that President Donald Trump's administration has canceled runs to 368 pages. It shows the international influence the United States has had across the globe. The projects ranged from Zambia to Albania to Kosovo.

The projects range from large infrastructure support programs (14 in unspecified locations worth $800 million each) to a $10 million investment in developing insect-resistant eggplants.

They also range from supporting famine early warning system networks (three projects worth $900 million each) to establishing an American Chamber of Commerce in Belarus.

Project cancellations and funding cuts have affected almost every country, from Albania to Zambia.

In Albania, according to published documents, USAID funded projects in the field of digital transformation by supporting critical infrastructure. This included the following sectors: electricity/natural gas/water transmission and distribution, electricity generation, telecommunications, district heating, oil, healthcare, finance/banking, and transportation.

There were also projects aimed at supporting vulnerable communities. In this context, the aim was to strengthen local institutional response mechanisms (resilience centers) to promote and protect the rights, safety and inclusion of marginalized women and men, especially women and girls, affected by conflict, discrimination and/or abuse, including support for survivors of all forms of gender-based violence.

Funding related to activities to help Albania's public sector improve financial controls, prevent corruption through better contract enforcement, and increase accountability and transparency in public procurement has also been canceled.

A major $520 million 'Prosper Africa' program to boost trade between the US and Africa has been cut, as have programs to improve soybean yields in sub-Saharan Africa and to help African health ministries deal with infectious diseases.

Venezuela received several grants, including one to secure its agricultural sector. Although Venezuela's communist government is a sworn enemy of the US, it was undoubtedly prudent for the US to try to support the country in stemming the tide of migrants.

Grants were also given to Iraq and Syria for "technical assistance to repatriated families" and to help with child immunization, despite clashes between the U.S. and those countries.

Grants for "humanitarian assistance to persecuted people in Cuba" and to promote "religious and ethnic freedom" in Asia were also canceled.

Numerous projects aimed at strengthening food security and fighting malaria, tuberculosis and HIV were also canned. The global vaccine platform, Gavi, has also been hit with major cuts.

Earlier this week, over 530 doctors, researchers, scientists and public health experts, who gathered at the 2025 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in San Francisco, wrote to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling for "an urgent reversal of recent decisions by the Trump administration."

Meanwhile, the US State Department has declined to comment on reports that over 700 diplomats have signed a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemning the cuts for endangering US security.

"The decision to freeze and terminate foreign aid contracts and aid grants without any meaningful review jeopardizes our partnerships with key allies, erodes trust, and creates space for adversaries to expand their influence," the diplomats' letter states, among other things.
