Gërdec Massacre/ Court hearing for Fatmir Mediu postponed, due to judge

17 years after the Gërdec massacre that claimed the lives of 26 people, the court process is still dragging on. The hearing in charge of former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu, which was to be held today, has been postponed. The reason was the absence of Judge Irena Gjoka, who had submitted a medical report.

The trial for Mediu is still in the phase of the objections that the former Minister of Defense is making to the expert report brought by the experts.

In the April 22 session, Mediu said that handling ammunition was the exclusive competence of the Armed Forces (AF) and not of the Minister of Defense. According to him, every government decision was accompanied by an order from the minister and then by an order or instruction from the Chief of the General Staff of the AF.

The case against Mediu

The reopening of the case against Mediu was set in motion after 12 years at the initiative of the family of one of the victims of the March 2008 explosion at the premises of the former "Tank Brigade", with 26 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

The trial against Fatmir Mediu has been ongoing since April 2023. According to SPAK, Mediu has harmed the interests of the state and favored 2 companies, 'SAC' and 'Albademil'. In this case, he is accused of "abuse of office" under the Criminal Code and "Abuse of office" in collaboration with a military entity-commanding cadre.
