Anastas Janullatos, who led the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania for about 34 years, passed away at the age of 95, after his health deteriorated in the hospital where he had been hospitalized since January 3 in Greece.
In the coming months, procedures for the election of the new Archbishop will begin.
The Holy Synod of the Church of Albania, in an extraordinary meeting on Saturday morning, elected the Metropolitan of Korça, Joan, as the supervisor of the Archbishop's Throne.
According to information from protothema.gr, Joan will succeed Janullatos, who was elected as Archbishop by Anastasius himself. Joan is an Albanian-speaking hierarch.
Meanwhile, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece announced the celebration of divine service at the Metropolis of Athens on Sunday (January 26), before the body of the blessed Archbishop of Albania Anastasios.
The divine service will be performed by the Vice-President of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan of Nafpaktos and Agios Vlasios. After its conclusion, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Leronymos, will perform a trisago for repose.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and PASOK president Nikos Androulakis will participate in the trisago.
According to the announcement, the body of the blessed primate will remain in the Athens Cathedral, where it will be placed on public pilgrimage until Monday morning, when it will be transferred to Albania.
Alongside the election of the supervisor, the Church of Albania declared five days of ecclesiastical mourning from January 25 to 29.
On Tuesday morning (January 28), the caravan departs from Greece, via the Kakavia border station.
The funeral will take place on Thursday, January 30 at 11:00, after the Divine Liturgy. Among others, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will also be present.
The burial will take place under the Holy Altar of the Cathedral, in a special crypt prepared by Anastasius himself.
