Meloni does not back down, Italian navy ship with 40 migrants departs for Gjadri

The Italian Navy ship departed this morning from the port of Brindisi with 40 migrants heading to Albania, where these people will be placed in detention centers according to the Rome-Tirana agreement on migrants.

These are immigrants of several nationalities, who will stay centrally in the Gjader camp, Rai reports.

The decision to transfer to Albania was made after the approval of a decree on March 28, which allows the transfer not only of asylum seekers intercepted at sea, but also of irregular migrants to whom the police station has delivered the deportation decision.

The Italian government then announced that it would transform the migrant detention centers it had built in Albania into a repatriation center for rejected asylum seekers, in an effort to overcome legal obstacles preventing the use of the facilities.

Italian judges have repeatedly annulled decisions to transfer to Albania migrants who arrived in Italy by sea.

The Italian government built camps for migrants in Albania and planned to receive around 36,000 men seeking asylum each year, and the entire plan is estimated to cost around 600 million euros.
