The Council of Ministers decided the new rules for the deportation of immigrants from the so-called "safe countries", which will bypass the decisions of justice and the obligations imposed by the Court of the EU.
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said a few days ago that she would not allow a court decision to break her pact with Albania for migrant camps. As he declared at the weekend, Meloni began legal maneuvers to overcome the obstacles brought by the decision of the Rome court.
The Council of Ministers in Italy approved today the new legal changes for immigrants and safe countries. The new rules to overcome the judiciary's refusal to immediately repatriate immigrants were approved within minutes.
The Council of Ministers decided the new rules for the deportation of immigrants from the so-called "safe countries", which will bypass the decisions of justice and the obligations imposed by the Court of the EU.
In a few minutes, the Council of Ministers approved a legal decree indicating in which countries immediate repatriations will be carried out: a "primary" formula which is stronger from a legislative point of view than the simple decree of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in force until today.
The new provision largely confirms the list of 22 countries considered safe by the Italian government, trying to "block" with a stronger law the possibility of immediate deportation for those who come from one of the countries on the compiled list today.
In today's changes, the Council of Ministers decided to reduce the number of safe countries from 22 to 19, after excluding Cameroon, Colombia and Nigeria.
It remains to be seen whether the courts - which in 95% of cases had not upheld the immigration ban - will change their stance after the legal changes made by the Meloni government.
The obstacle, in fact, was imposed by the decision of the Court of the EU of October 4, which did not include the majority of the 22 countries among those able to protect the rights of all citizens.
European judges have specified that a country cannot be safe if part of its territory does not guarantee the protection of the rights of all citizens, without excluding any category.
Therefore, the exclusion of Colombia, Nigeria and Cameroon, countries that do not meet these criteria will pave the way for the continuation of the Rama-Meloni agreement./ Adapted "Pamphlet" from " Corriere dell sera "
