As is rare in Tirana, March 8 was also marked by protests, in addition to various holidays and events for International Women's Day.

A group of activists marched from the Student City to the Prime Minister's Office last night, singing and chanting slogans for the respect of women's rights.

Symbols of the LGBTQ+ community were also present in this protest.

The protest culminated with the detention of the activists in front of the Prime Minister's building, where as a sign of protest they burned the recipes in a pot.

How did International Women's Day begin?

International Women's Day grew out of the labor movement. This day dates back to 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better wages and the right to vote.

A year later, the Socialist Party of America proclaimed the first National Women's Day. The idea to make it an international event came from Clara Zetkin, a communist activist and women's rights advocate. In 1910, she raised it at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. The activist's suggestion was supported by 100 women from 17 countries who were in the confederation.

The first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The United Nations began marking the event in 1975. The first theme adopted by the UN (in 1996) was “Celebrating the past, planning for the future”.

Why is International Women's Day celebrated on March 8?

Activist Zetkin's original idea for an international holiday was not tied to a specific day. The date March 8 was chosen after Russian women demanded bread and peace during a wartime strike in 1917. 4 days after the strike, the Tsar was forced to abdicate and the Provisional Government gave women the right to vote. According to the Julian calendar, which was then used in Russia, the women's strike began on February 23. In the Gregorian calendar used in most of the world, this date is March 8.

How is International Women's Day celebrated around the world?

International Women's Day is a national holiday in many countries. In China, many women are given half a day off from work as advised by the State Council. Thousands of events take place around the world, including marches, talks, concerts, exhibitions and debates.

In Italy, it is called "Festa della Donna", and mimosa flowers are a popular gift. Flower sales in Russia usually double around International Women's Day. In the US, March is Women's History Month. A presidential proclamation issued each year honors the achievements of American women. Also in Albania, March 8 is celebrated all over the country, where flowers are undoubtedly the symbol and many events are held in honor of women on this day.
