The risk of such dangerous situations in Manez of Durrës was warned in 2012 when the then government accepted the arrival of the first members of the Iranian opposition on Albanian soil.

The last group of them arrived in the Ashraf 3 camp in Manez, Durrës in 2016. Albania hosted them at the request of the United States of America, as their lives were in danger after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Their placement in Albania was done only for humanitarian purposes.

Members of the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran were initially considered a terrorist organization by most Western countries, including the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the US itself until 2012.

This movement was created in the early 1960s as a protest movement against the regime of the Shah of Iran and operates in emigration.

If you see the perimeter of the MEK base in Albania, it looks like a giant military-style complex. Who finances them or questions about their activities inside the camp have always been a topic of debate. Therefore MEK has accusations of hermeticism, of a group that functions as a sect or even of not respecting the rights of their own ranks.

The establishment of the mujahedin in Albania dates back to 2012, when the government led at that time by Sali Berisha accepted the request of the American government to host the first members.

Further, in 2014, the sheltering of hundreds of other Mujahideen continued, who have been arriving continuously since then in different groups.

The MEK was among the main instigators and supporters of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which overthrew the Shah's regime. After the revolution, an Islamic theocratic system was established in Iran under the leadership of the mullahs, which faced fierce opposition from the MEK, which was opposed to Islamic autocracy. As a result, the Iranian regime began persecuting the organization's members, forcing its leaders and thousands of members to emigrate.

After many years of staying in two different camps in Iraq, the American government decided to take the Iranian opposition under its patronage, taking care of their security. Ashraf3's camp in Manza is often visited by high-ranking American officials or former officials.
