The tragedy that took the lives of two children in Durrës once again highlighted the gap between the reality on the ground and the "standard" reactions of Albanian politics, limited mainly to posts on social networks.
The Mayor of Durrës, Emirjana Sako, described the event as a "day of mourning" for the city and shared the pain with the family, but her reaction remained within the limits of an emotional online message, without any concrete reference to institutional responsibility or urgent measures:
"The loss of the lives of two angels today has become a day of mourning for all of Durrës. As a mother, I share the extraordinary pain with the children's families and express my most sincere condolences."
Let's pray together for the boy who is in the Trauma Hospital, that he gets through this difficult moment and returns to his family as soon as possible.
This serious accident should serve as a call for deep reflection, not only for institutions, but for all of us as individuals, parents, citizens, and society.
May they be of heaven.”
A "deep reflection" that in practice translates again into nothing concrete about road safety in the city's neighborhoods, where children continue to play in the streets without any real protection.
Along the same lines was the reaction of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who from Yerevan, Armenia, where he was for an international meeting, was content with a message of condolence on the X network:
"We have just landed in Yerevan, Armenia for the European Political Community and I have learned of the inconsolable tragedy of the loss of two children, while the third child is fighting for life under the care of doctors. May God bless the two little souls, give the parents the extraordinary strength to survive the great pain, while I join in prayers for the recovery of the child in the hospital."
Not a word about the specific people responsible, about security controls on inner city streets, or about measures that should have been taken yesterday, not after the tragedy.
Meanwhile, the facts are stubborn.
The accident occurred on a secondary road within neighborhood no. 15, where children were playing on the side of the road. Footage shows a driver, Nikoll Radaçi, losing control and hitting the minors, stopping only after hitting a parked car. A scenario that is repeated frequently in Albanian cities, where the lack of control, signage and protective measures is chronic.
Radaç was known as a problematic person in the area, who neighbors say performed dangerous car maneuvers and consumed alcohol.
Two children have lost their lives and another is in serious condition at the Trauma Hospital in Tirana, but the state's response is reduced to statuses, prayers, and big words for "reflection."
Because in Albania, tragedies often end with an irresponsible post.
