The case of Michele D'Angelo has caused reactions at high political and academic levels...
Michele D'Angelo, 44, a biology professor at the University of L'Aquila and an internationally renowned scientist, has been in Fier prison for almost two months, following a road accident on August 8 on the Levan-Fier road.
Albanian authorities accuse him of “violating traffic rules” and “abandoning a vehicle.” Details of the incident remain unclear, creating concern in the academic community and Italian institutions, ANSA reports.
The road accident involved the professor's Lancia Ypsilon and a Mercedes driven by an Albanian national with the initials ES, who allegedly lost control due to speeding. According to people close to D'Angelo, the professor was traveling at 40 km/h and was unable to avoid colliding with the other vehicle. Local authorities accuse him of leaving the scene, an action that his lawyers interpret as an instinctive reaction and not an escape attempt.
On September 19, D'Alfonso addressed a question to President Begaj, requesting maximum bilateral cooperation and the activation of judicial cooperation instruments between Italy and Albania, to adopt alternative measures to detention.
Professor D'Angelo holds important positions at the University of L'Aquila and at international institutions, including the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Temple University in Philadelphia. He coordinates internationally funded projects, and his absence could hinder the completion of projects and jeopardize the university's funding.
The rector of the University of L'Aquila, Fabio Graziosi, and the head of the department, Anna Maria Cimini, expressed concern for the professor's psychological state and the mobilization to demand his release. "We hope that all the initiatives taken will lead to his immediate return home," Cimini declared.
The case of Michele D'Angelo has caused reactions at high political and academic levels, prompting discussions on precautionary measures in case of accidents and the importance of protecting international cooperation in science. The Italian academic community and Albanian institutions are awaiting further developments and official clarifications on the treatment of the professor.
