Why didn't SPAK put "water on the fire" for the Aruba summit?

SPAK would be good to provide information to the public if there is sufficient data to initiate an investigation into the incident in question, at least an announcement...

While the Americans are repeatedly emphasizing organized crime, SPAK seems not to be getting the right messages. Even today, the US envoy made it clear that organized crime is a very big threat.

The statement was made in a meeting with Interior Minister Albana Koçiu and came after details about the so-called "Aruba Summit" emerged.

The Italian newspaper "Domani" published some passages from the book "Invincibili. La mafia albanese da Roma alla conquista del mondo" by the author Nello Trocchia. It shows details about the role of Albanian drug groups, while also mentioning names close to the government. The article mentioned a meeting in the Caribbean, between crime gangs and people of Prime Minister Rama.

The news has caused a stir in our country, as it is an alarm bell for the authorities. According to Italian media, the meeting took place several years ago and there is wiretaps and evidence. But what is striking is that SPAK has not been put into action at all.

This has also been commented on by former prosecutor Gentian Trenova. According to Trenova, this information is only a small part of the reality and the fact that it is being revealed now, for an event in 2019, is "extremely strange."

" The news that the Italian journalist has released may be only a small part of the overall picture that is being discussed. However, it is strange that this information has come out now. It is about 2019 and we do not have complete information whether foreign authorities have conducted investigations regarding this case, or at what stage the investigations are and who the foreign authorities are besides the Italian ones, if any. Whether the American authorities, the DEA for example, have conducted their investigations and to what level they are ," the former prosecutor said in an interview with Syri TV.

He raised questions about the role of American authorities, such as the DEA, for which it is not known whether they have conducted investigations and at what level.

According to him, Albania has been accused for years in international reports of government collaboration with criminal organizations and money laundering through investments, but the Albanian authorities have chosen not to act.

" The idea is that in Albania, for many years, Albania and the Albanian government have been accused by international media, but also by secret or open, public foreign reports, that it is clear that they are collaborating with criminal organizations in order to bring drug trafficking money and launder it in Albania through various investments made in different fields. This is known, it is talked about every day, but this remains only in words, but it is not that the responsible authorities have taken the right steps, so we do not see that the right steps have been taken, the necessary ones that have a legal obligation, at least to start investigations. SPAK would be good to provide information to the public if there is such data for the event in question to start an investigation, at least a notification ", Trenova said.

He asked SPAK to provide even minimal information to the public, if it has data that justifies launching an investigation. According to him, the situation is serious, because despite the justice reform and the large funds poured in by internationals, corruption and organized crime have not only not been curbed, but have also increased year after year.

" The most serious thing is that the Albanian authorities do not investigate important things, things that interest the public, and we even get into a kind of absurdity because here a major reform in justice has been carried out, where a lot of money has been paid by foreign authorities and the Albanian state to have an institution to fight corruption, while the opposite has happened: corruption has increased from year to year, as has organized crime, where the strength of organized crime has also increased from year to year. Meanwhile, the absurdity continues because the justice reform continues to be praised by foreign authorities, by the EU, while these institutions that have emerged from this reform have failed ," said Trenova.
