Citizens who own property will pay a higher tax from 2026. However, the tax will not increase for everyone as the law aims to protect the poor.

The new property tax, which will start to be applied in 2026 for buildings and in 2028 for agricultural lands, is expected to become the main source of income for the country's municipalities.

According to the formula that is proposed and will be consulted until the end of the month, the payment will be about 3 times higher than today and will be paid once a year.

Meanwhile, for those who own a second property, taxation will be progressive. So they will pay with a higher coefficient, which can be as much as double the first property.

For the Ministry of Finance, the draft law protects certain categories or social groups that have minimal income, exempting them from payment.

The ministry argues that the new property taxation is based on market value and is intended to be efficiently collected by all municipalities in the country.

In the description of the law, it is said that it comes as a necessity, since the land and buildings are closely related to the services provided by the respective municipalities, especially in the construction and maintenance of local roads, urban transport, municipal police, fire protection, etc.
