Graveyard Bargain in Saranda/ Funeral agencies turn cemeteries into private

The show Fiks Fare covered the shopping for a grave in Saranda on Wednesday evening.

Two funeral agencies operating in this city open and reserve graves without any bodies, all for a considerable sum of money ranging from 75 thousand lek to millions of lek.

Fiks Fare began its investigation from complaints that came to the show's editorial office that both in the old city cemeteries, but also in the new ones that the Municipality of Saranda has approved in the village of Volloder, grave sites are being sold.

Burials in the city's old cemeteries were banned by the Saranda Municipality because there were no more spaces, but to this day, graves are dug there and fictitious names are placed on them.

Fiksi saw these places up close and the two funeral agencies operating in the country are fighting over the opening of graves, especially in the old cemeteries, as the price is very high. Even in the old cemeteries, the journalists found the owner of the funeral agency 'Paqja' and saw up close the empty open graves which had a plaque on top and a fictitious name. He claimed that the grave sites were opened by the agency "Bebri" and that he cannot perform burials in these cemeteries.

Meanwhile, Fiksi is present when the two owners of two funeral agencies argue with each other about the locations. Where the owner of the "Bebri" agency tells him that he should have worked like him to find locations about 3 months ago even though the municipality has banned him from opening new locations.

Fiksi also takes an interest in the funeral agency 'Bebri' where the owner's wife orders one of the employees to put the filming team out of business. Then the owner, Mr. Myrteza Haska, comes to the business and initially pretends to be a client and then reveals that he is the owner of the agency. He initially threatens Fiksi's team not to film because otherwise they will have to deal with him. Then, when the journalist asks why grave sites are sold for millions of lek, he corrects him on the figure, saying that the payment starts at 35 thousand lek and justifies that he does this in agreement with the municipality. Then he denies opening graves without having a dead body and here Fiksi's journalists confront him with a citizen who lives in Greece, but who bought the grave site from him. Haska admits that the person is in Greece and that he died there. When the journalist asks where the death certificate is, Haska replies "I don't have a document, when the body arrives, the documents will come too".

Another funeral agency, "Paqja", which reserves paid places but in the new cemetery, namely in Volloder, is also in violation of the law.

Together with a colleague, Fiksi goes to this agency and asks for a burial place. The owner Thimjo Mëhilli tells them that there is no burial place in the old cemetery, while in the new cemetery there are two alternatives; 35 thousand lek for an individual grave and 75 thousand lek for a two-story one. Together with Mr. Mëhilli, they go to the cemetery to the place he sold them and place the markers and tell them that the grave will be opened on Friday. Then he asks them for an advance payment of 20 thousand lek, which they take.

Fiks Fare also inquired with the Public Services Directorate of the Municipality of Saranda about the problem of reserving grave sites in both city cemeteries.

This directorate, in its response, explains that the existing cemeteries of the city of Saranda have a limited territory, therefore, in September 2021, a new territory was approved for the provision of this service. This municipality is drafting a regulation for the operation and administration of public cemeteries, which will soon be submitted for approval to the municipal council.

Immediately after Fiks Fare informed them that there were fictitious burial sites in the old city cemetery that were being reserved later, the Municipality of Saranda intervened by sending employees of the public services department and the municipal police, who surrounded the area where these sites were located. They demolished all open sites, prohibiting burials in that area of the public cemetery.
