As the US appears to be withdrawing its engagement in Europe and the Balkans, Brussels has strengthened its ranks.
The European Parliament will open an office in Albania to further strengthen its engagement with the Western Balkans.
In the context of heightened geopolitical tensions and renewed momentum following EU enlargement, the new Parliament office in Tirana will serve as a key point of contact between the European Parliament and national parliaments, civil society and local partners in the Western Balkans.
The Office will promote Parliament's positions and activities, in particular in relation to EU accession, and support democracy and institutional reforms in the region. It will also assist in the preparation and follow-up of official visits by MEPs, while strengthening cooperation with other EU actors on the ground, and with international and civil society organisations.
“ The European Parliament has consistently supported the European perspective of the Western Balkans, recognising its strategic importance for regional stability and the wider European project. The establishment of the antenna office reflects the EU’s broader strategy for deepening engagement with candidate countries. The vital need to strengthen EU partnerships in the Western Balkans has become even clearer given the current geopolitical challenges, not least Russia’s war in Ukraine. The establishment of an EP antenna office in Tirana underlines Parliament’s strong commitment to supporting the Western Balkan countries on their path towards EU membership, promoting stability, democracy and closer ties between the EU and its neighbours, ” a statement said.
This move comes at a time when the US role is weakening in the region and Brussels has stepped in to prevent any kind of destabilization or tension.
