US legal advisor meets Veliaj in cell: Keeping a politician in custody violates

The team of lawyers for the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, visited the detention facilities in Durrës today, one day before the appeal hearing to review his request for conditional release.

At this meeting, they were joined by Joshua Roberts, a representative of the American law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP, which is advising Veliaj.

In a statement to the media after the visit, Roberts announced that he is in Albania as an observer and stressed the importance of respecting international legal standards.

"In the United States, under the Constitution and American law, criminal charges are filed only when there is reasonable cause that a criminal offense has been committed.

"Also, the detention of citizens before trial only occurs if they pose a flight risk or a danger to society," Roberts stated.

He added that “keeping a politician in detention without clear charges and without a justified risk is contrary to the principles of the rule of law and democracy.” “Tomorrow I will closely follow the appeal arguments in the case of Mayor Veliaj,” he said.

The Appeals Court of Appeals will review tomorrow the appeal filed by the Mayor of Tirana against the first instance decision that imposed the security measure of 'prison arrest' on Erion Veliaj. The latter is being investigated for corruption and money laundering.

Veliaj was arrested by order of SPAK on February 10, while the prosecutors of the case are Ols Dado and Altin Dumani. The security measure for Veliaj was set by the GJKKO, more specifically judge Erion Bani.

Meanwhile, the Appeals Judge of the GJKKO who will decide whether this security measure will continue or change is Ergert Pëllumbi.
