The Constitutional Court has notified the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) and the lawyers of the mayor of Tirana, Erjon Veliaj, to file their submissions as parties in the case where the latter is seeking to declare the security measure "prison arrest" unconstitutional by February 27.
According to journalist Anila Hoxha, the request was addressed to the parties in writing by the Constitutional Court, which last week announced the mayor's request would be forwarded to a plenary session.
Meanwhile, the mayor, along with 29 other people, has been put on trial after about four months of preliminary hearings. The case is expected to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court, which will decide on the constitutionality of the security measure imposed on him.
We recall that Veliaj was arrested on February 10, 2025 by order of SPAK, after a long investigation into corruption allegations. He has spent a full year in detention, being held in a cell despite defense requests for a replacement security measure.
