Whenever there was a political dispute between Greece and Albania, the Greek police rounded up Albanian immigrants and repatriated them.
Those developments have remained as a strong reminder of the immigrants who suffered every time the outstanding issues between the two countries were raised. From the Cham issue, to maritime borders, the remains of Greek soldiers, the minority, etc., Inside Story has traveled to Athens to see first-hand how political developments have affected their lives there.
"It had a lot of influence on us every time there was a political clash. When Albania recognized North Macedonia for the first time, the police were very aggressive. We could not go to the bakery", said the immigrant, Shefik Hysa.
"It is a painful story that sweep operations were often done deliberately so that when you worked for a farmer and they sent you back to Albania, it was very difficult for you to prove how much lek they were owed," said the immigrant, Etmond Entered.
The testimonies of the Albanian immigrants there about the situation during the last years are quite interesting. Although they may be over 3 decades old and have been integrated, recent years have seen the reactivation of allegedly retaliatory policies related to recent disputes./ InsideStory
