Firefighters fought yesterday for 10 hours with flames that engulfed the "Metropol" shopping center in Lushnja. The lack of a ladder made it difficult to extinguish the fire, while firefighters poured water from the first floor to the burning fourth floor of the center.
The head of the firemen's union, Bledar Bajrami, said on Report TV that the fire had great power and could not be dealt with, while the difficulties were also the fact that the firemen did not have the right tools, such as the lack of a ladder that was sent about 8 hours late. Also, firefighter Bajrami raised the concern of space and narrow streets that also make the work of firefighters difficult.
Bajrami says that Lushnja needs 40 firefighters, but currently there are only 18.
"The fire itself had very great power, it could not be fought with either water or foam. The first moment they have to fight, which requires a powerful army to fight, they have neither means nor a way to cross. The citizens themselves are also to blame, they cannot block the path of the fire brigade", said Bajrami.
Another big problem is the fire extinguishing systems, which the experts in the studio said are missing in most cases. Construction engineer Gëzim Beqaj says that in this case the fire extinguishing system did not work. He explains that the source of the fire was inside and the facade did not cause the flames to spread. He emphasizes that if the center had a functional system against extinguishing the fire, the outbreak would have been isolated and would not have spread so widely.
"There are also equipment that are in short supply. If it had been blocked at the beginning, it would not have had these dimensions, if there had been power behind it, it would have been blocked from the beginning, water, hydrants", said Bajrami.
"In this particular case, I don't believe that it is left in the building materials, the fire started inside. I think it may be a problem of fire protection measures that have not worked. The fire fighting system is mandatory and functional, and it automatically extinguishes the fire and signals it. Apparently it didn't work here. The hearth was from the inside, if it had been an efficient system, it should have intervened to extinguish the fire. The systems are tested, if they are functional, they are given permission to use. This system has not worked. 1 time in 6 months should be tested whether it works or not. Then the fire is localized by this system", said construction engineer Beqaj.
The fire is thought to have started in a shoe store on the third floor from an electrical spark or something left on, but experts are expected to verify the exact cause.
