Albanians are giving up on "Mercedes", over 1 million cars on the country's roads

For the first time in Albania, the number of road vehicles in circulation has exceeded 1 million. According to INSTAT data, at the end of the second quarter of 2025, there were 1,002,629 vehicles circulating on the roads, of which 810,129 are cars.

Although Mercedes continues to be the most present brand in the total national fleet, with nearly 18% of vehicles, its position as the "king" of new registrations has fallen. Volkswagen has taken the lead with 20.1% of registrations during the quarter, while Mercedes follows with 15.8%.

This change marks a new trend among Albanian drivers, who are choosing more economical cars and those more suitable for current infrastructure conditions, while Mercedes has long been seen as a symbol of strength and durability on Albanian roads.

Although there have been efforts to renew the fleet, old vehicles continue to dominate: over 590 thousand vehicles are over 15 years old.

Tirana holds the main share with 34.8% of vehicles in circulation, followed by Durrës with 13.6%, while Gjirokastra and Kukës have the lowest percentage.

During the quarter, 26,976 vehicles were registered for the first time, while in the first half of the year new registrations reached 47,459, a decrease of 7.3% compared to a year earlier, despite a 9.6% increase in the total fleet.
