Albania is coping with rising energy prices more easily thanks to high production from hydroelectric power plants. The abundant water flows have helped keep prices under control in the domestic market. In contrast, countries that depend on gas, such as Italy and Germany, are experiencing significant growth. The situation shows that renewable sources reduce the impact of external energy crises.

The escalation of the conflict with Iran has shaken global oil and gas markets, causing significant increases in energy prices in Europe. However, the impact is not the same in all countries, as the structure of energy production has played a decisive role.

The media "Reuters" in an article on this phenomenon, where it takes the example of Albania and emphasizes that the high production from hydroelectric power plants, which provide over 90% of electricity, has helped keep prices under control.

"The Drin River, which flows through the mountains of northern Albania, is acting as a kind of shield," begins the Reuters article.

According to comparative data in Europe, countries with a high share of renewable resources have been more protected from strong market fluctuations.

In contrast, economies that rely on gas and oil have faced huge increases. Italy has seen wholesale electricity prices rise by over 20%, while in Germany prices have risen by over 15%. This has added to inflationary pressure and raised concerns about a possible economic slowdown.

Meanwhile, France and Spain have experienced more stable developments. France, which relies mainly on nuclear energy, has seen more limited growth, while Spain, thanks to the rapid expansion of renewable sources, has also seen price decreases.

The article says that the current crisis could widen the disparities between energy markets in Europe, hitting countries with high dependence on fuel imports harder. At the same time, the situation could serve as an incentive to accelerate the transition to green energy, while the European Union is considering measures to protect households and businesses from rising costs.

Full Reuters article:

As the Iran war disrupts global oil and gas flows and energy prices rise sharply, the Drin River, which winds its way through the mountains of northern Albania, is acting as a kind of shield.

Swollen by winter rains and melting snow, and filled with hydroelectric dams built during the communist era, the river's power provides more than 90% of the Balkan country's electricity production, helping to keep wholesale prices under control.

Albania is an example of how countries with higher renewable energy production have been shielded from sharp increases in electricity prices since the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, price comparisons from across Europe show. That could help households, businesses and growth in those countries, while the price impact will be passed on to ordinary consumers in the months ahead, analysts said.

This could also strengthen the green energy transition in Europe, which has been criticized for a lack of urgency and attacked by the likes of US President Donald Trump.

Countries heavily dependent on oil and gas face steeper price increases, adding to inflationary pressure and raising the possibility of a global recession, a familiar concern for Europeans who survived the energy crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The crisis is pushing up regional minimum prices for everyone, but countries with less flexibility and greater marginal dependence on imported fuels are seeing the strongest impact on volatility and peak prices, said Satyam Singh, an analyst at energy research firm Rystad.

Differences in energy prices appear across Europe

Across the Adriatic Sea from Albania, Italy, which generates more than 40% of its electricity from gas, has seen its wholesale contract price increase by more than 20% since the start of the war. In gas-hungry Germany, the reference price has risen by more than 15%.

By contrast, the standard in France, which relies on nuclear power for 70% of its electricity generation, has risen by less than half that of Italy over the same period. In Spain, which has rapidly increased renewable energy production to almost 60% of total output, prices have fallen. Albania also recorded lower average prices in March compared to a year ago, thanks to its abundant hydropower capacity. / Adapted from “Pamphlet”, from “Reuters” .

Jo vetem hidrocentralet jane sukses i regjimit te Enver Hoxhes. Give the devil his due, apo jo.
