New rules/Traveling to EU countries, from fingerprints to facial images, how you

The European Union is introducing a new entry system that will replace traditional stamps in passports.

Now, non-EU citizens will have to undergo a biometric scan and their data will be entered into a special database, where it will be stored for the next three years. If the traveler refuses to undergo the scan, they will be refused entry.

This innovation will enter into force on October 12, 2025.

At the same time, at the end of 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will begin operating, requiring citizens of non-EU countries that have visa-free status with the European Union to pay a fee of 20 euros and obtain a special permit.

To do this, they will need to apply online in advance and receive an electronic entry permit linked to their passports.

What is the Entry/Exit System?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated IT system implemented by the EU for the management of external borders for third-country nationals. It will record the entry and exit of travellers into the Schengen area, replacing the manual stamping of passports.

The EES system will collect and store biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial images, along with other travel-related information. The system aims to strengthen border security, improve migration management and facilitate travel.

The EES system will have a central database to store this information and facilitate border checks.

The EES system aims to strengthen border security through accurate monitoring of travel patterns and detection of possible overstays.

By monitoring entries and exits and detecting overstays, the EES will help combat illegal immigration.

Travelers will use automated booths to scan their passports and provide biometric data.

The EES will be integrated with other EU information systems, such as the VIS (Visa Information System).
