DP protests on the anniversary of the fall of Enver Hoxha's bust, police publish plan of measures...
The Democratic Party will hold its next protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office tomorrow, February 20, at 6:00 p.m. The date coincides with the anniversary of the toppling of the bust of former dictator Enver Hoxha, a symbolism that the opposition has linked to the call for the rally.
The last two protests organized by the DP have been marked by episodes of smoke and flames, while there were tensions at the end of the rallies. Preliminary signals speak of a high mobilization, while the authorities are prepared for any scenario.
The State Police has announced that it has taken measures to guarantee order and security during the protest. Over 1,000 officers will be engaged in the field and on standby, including the Law Enforcement Forces, the National Security Forces and RENEA, as well as civilian agents.
Starting at 23:45 on Thursday, no parking will be allowed on the “Dëshmorët e Kombit” boulevard, from “Ura e Dajtit” to “Ismail Qemali” street, until the end of the rally. Starting at 15:00 on Friday, vehicle traffic will be blocked in the segment from the intersection near the Ministry of Interior to “Mother Teresa” Square, as well as on “Ukraine e Lirë”, “Papa John Paul II” and “Ismail Qemali” streets.
Depending on the development of the protest, there may be other temporary restrictions on various road axes. Tirana Police announces that traffic diversions are foreseen via alternative routes and appeals to citizens to avoid vehicle movements in the areas that will be blocked, as well as to distance themselves from any illegal action that violates public order and safety.
Meanwhile, the United States Embassy in Tirana has reacted to the announced protest, urging American citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in the capital. The statement states that diplomatic personnel have been advised to avoid the demonstration, while citizens are recommended to monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities, as such gatherings, even when they start peacefully, can escalate and lead to traffic disruptions and road closures.
