Albania is aging rapidly, UN report: First in the world for declining birth

Albania is shrinking and aging. The population projection report from the United Nations organization has not optimistic predictions for our country.

While it is thought that by 2054 births will be halved, resulting in a drop from 22,000 babies born in 2024 to around 10-11,000 babies in 2050, experts have concluded that emigration is the main cause of the decline in births.

They have ranked Albania first in the world for the number of births lost as a result of emigration. Sociologists view this situation with concern, saying that the consequences will be manifold.

"These will be reflected firstly in the shrinking population of the Republic of Albania, secondly in the decrease in the number of marriages, thirdly in the aging of the population, " said Entela Binjaku.

According to United Nations projections, all countries in the region are expected to experience a drastic decline in births as a result of the emigration of women of reproductive age. It is even more sensitive in countries with low fertility rates, where couples do not even replace themselves. Italy and Greece are the two exceptions, as they are still benefiting from an increase in births from immigrants.
