Albanians with suitcases ready, the first in the Balkans who want to emigrate

The economies of the Western Balkans, especially Albania, should be alarmed by the high potential of the population seeking to emigrate permanently, signaling a vicious circle of a demographic, economic and political crisis, said the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), after the analysis of the results of the Security Barometer survey for the year 2023.

The results of the survey that took place in May-June 2023 in 6 countries of the Western Balkans showed that although Albania has so far experienced stronger emigration than the Region, it still has a high potential of leaving the country, especially for educated young people.

The survey that was conducted on about 6,000 people in the Balkans showed that 31 percent of Albanians plan to leave the country. But most importantly, 18 percent of them already have plans and have found ways to escape.

The results show that emigration in Albania is more aggressive than in other countries, since a greater percentage of Albanians do not want to emigrate temporarily but permanently. (see graphs below).

Of the Albanians who have agreed to leave, almost 44% want to emigrate permanently, the highest level in the Region.

Those who intend to leave are generally concentrated in the active 18-44 workforce, while those who do not want to leave dominate the 45-65+ group of the population.

Despite a contraction from 2022, plans for emigration continue in the Region and mainly in Albania, turning the phenomenon of departure into a sustainable trend. The RCC analysis shows that such a trend will undoubtedly deepen the demographic crisis, due to a dangerous combination of continued migration and population aging.

This situation creates the conditions for more labor force shortages, already considered an emergency for Albania.

In Albania, the driving factors that promote emigration are related to economic reasons and distrust in institutions. At the same time, the expansion of family networks and the number of those who can use these connections are reinforced, further stimulating the outflows of migration.

On the other hand, the migratory tendency of well-educated respondents inevitably reinforces the brain drain problems already present in regional economies.

This contingent is inclined to move to already stable societies rather than struggle to secure better conditions at home. Their removal is leading to poor performance in all areas and erosion of accountability in the country. /B.Hoxha /Monitor
