The next hearing on the "Partizani" affair is about to begin, former minister Ylli Pango and the former director of Sports testify today
The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime is expected to hold its next hearing on the "Partizani" case, where former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, are defendants. The latter is also accused of money laundering.
Today's hearing is considered important due to the testimonies expected to be given by two former officials of the Ministry of Sports, who played a role in the legal and administrative processes related to the privatization of the former "Partizani" sports complex.
SPAK has summoned former Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Ylli Pango, as well as the former Director of Sports at the time, Violeta Shqevi, to court. The prosecution aims to clarify how the legal changes were implemented that, according to the indictment, paved the way for the privatization of property and the subsequent development of construction projects in that area.
At the center of the investigation remains the amendment to the law on sports in 2008. According to SPAK, initially the legal framework did not allow the privatization or concession of sports facilities with a change of destination. Later, the law was amended to prohibit privatization, but a few months later another legal intervention was undertaken that allowed not only privatization in favor of the former owners, but also the change of destination of the property.
The prosecution claims that these changes created the conditions for the construction of multi-storey tower complexes on the territory of the former Partizani sports club. According to the indictment, Malltezi has benefited from this process by millions of euros.
It is expected that during their testimony, Pango and Shqevi will provide clarifications on the procedures followed in the ministry, the legal changes of the time, and the role of institutions in the privatization process of the sports complex.
