A 40-year-old Albanian man, Romeo Bajrami, has been charged by US federal authorities after allegedly illegally entering the United States by crossing the border from Canada on a rented jet ski.
According to foreign media, Bajrami used a Sea-Doo type watercraft to cross the St. Clair River. During the crossing, he allegedly opened a "live" broadcast on Facebook, while the footage was later obtained by investigators and included in the investigative file as evidence.
Investigations revealed that the 40-year-old had rented the jet ski in the city of Sarnia, Canada, but had not returned it. After being notified by Canadian authorities, the US Coast Guard and Border Patrol launched a search, finding the vehicle abandoned on the shores of Port Huron, Michigan.
During the verification, investigators also identified a video posted on Facebook, which they say shows Bajrami crossing the river on a Sea-Doo. Authorities say the video's location data matches the area where he is suspected of illegally entering US territory.
After nearly a year of investigations, Bajrami was located in a Boston jail, where he was being held for another case.
He already faces a charge of illegal entry into the United States and, if convicted, faces a sentence of up to six months in prison.
