Meloni explodes against Israel: It is an insult to believers and religious freedom on one of Christianity's holiest days

An unusual incident with strong diplomatic repercussions shook Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Israeli police prevented Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and Father Francesco Ielpo, the Custodian of the Holy Land, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where they were to celebrate Mass on one of the most important days of the Christian calendar.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem itself called the act a “grave precedent,” declaring that the measure was “clearly unreasonable and grossly disproportionate.” According to the official statement, the two clerics were not participating in a public procession, but were moving privately to the church, which makes the accusation that this is an unjustified overreach by the Israeli authorities even stronger.

The case has sparked an immediate backlash in Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly condemned the ban, calling it not only an insult to believers but also to the very principle of religious freedom. The Italian response elevates the incident from a security clash on the ground to a matter of political and international significance.

On the other hand, the Israeli police have defended the action with the argument of the security situation, claiming that entry had been refused earlier due to the operational risk in the Old City and the inability for emergency vehicles to intervene quickly in the event of a mass incident.

But this is where the real clash begins: between the justification of security and the right to freely exercise one's faith in a country that holds unique spiritual weight for billions of Christians. In a region riven by war and tension, this episode risks being read not simply as a police measure, but as a dangerous signal for the status of the holy sites and for the relationship of the Israeli state with Christian communities in the Holy Land./ Pamphlet
