SPAK has extended the investigation deadlines for PL President Ilir Meta by 6 months. The investigations into Meta were extended with the claim that new evidence is expected, while the PL President is being investigated for lobbying in the US and the CEZ/DIA affair.
Lawyer Kujtim Cakrani considered the extension of the investigations unnecessary, while accusing SPAK of being a political prosecutor.
Cakrani said that SPAK's request to extend the investigation deadlines comes at a time when he was expecting his client to be released from detention, where he has been since October 2024. He said that SPAK has exceeded all deadlines in the case of the former President.
"Today we were called to SPAK to be informed of the extension of the investigation into Ilir Meta. Seeing that the deadline ends tomorrow, the prosecutors decided to extend the investigation by 6 months.
This criminal offense Meta is accused of was registered in 2019, approximately 6 years have passed since then. SPAK has not yet collected evidence to implicate Meta and he is currently in custody on charges he does not know about.
"The point is why the former President of the Republic is being held in custody. And Putin has arrested them in a civil manner, Meta has been kidnapped," the lawyer said.
According to Cakran, Meta has been in detention for 7 months and SPAK has not fulfilled its legal obligation to request from the Court every two months an extension of the detention measure.
"We will take the matter to the Constitutional Court and then to Strasbourg. How is it possible that SPAK, even after a year, says that there is no evidence to continue the investigation against Meta? Here I have a letter where the Prosecution again requests an extension of the deadline by another 6 months," he said.
According to the lawyer, this is the second time an extension has been requested with a "dry" letter, according to him, stating that "they are waiting for evidence, waiting for the expert report of the former mother-in-law." "What does Mr. Meta have to do with the expert reports of the mother-in-law?", he asked.
"Meta is being held in custody for charges that even SPAK does not know about. It has been 6 years and they still have not collected any evidence for former president Ilir Meta. We do not understand why he is being held in custody. Why is Ilir Meta being held in custody? This is the question that is being asked. We are not against the investigation, he is in favor of the investigation, but why is he being held in custody?"
The lawyer emphasized that everyone knows that Meta is being held for political reasons.
"This proceeding began 6 years ago. If SPAK had wanted to, it would have influenced their colleagues at the Tirana Prosecutor's Office to investigate, to uncover how Ilir Meta was kidnapped by those police officers," said Cakrani.
The lawyer warned that they will take this matter to the Constitutional Court and to Strasbourg, objecting to Meta's stay in prison, according to him without evidence, as well as the manner of arrest, which will be sent to the European Court of Human Rights.
