Often there are young people who complain of pain in the back, neck or the entire column.
The neurosurgeon, professor Arsen Seferi, explains that sitting for a long time in wrong positions or lifting weights has led to an increase in degenerative diseases of the spine, disc herniation, sciatic nerve and other problems, mainly among young people. But is surgery a solution and when should you intervene?
"When it presses the marrow, for example in the neck or chest, it causes difficulty in movement. In general, these types of hernias need to be operated. What is the most common, lumbar hernia, are hernias which classical clinics is sciatica. Surgery is done urgently only when you have urinary problems or motor deficits", says Seferi.
But not all herniated discs need surgery.
"The majority of patients with disc herniation calm down and need to be patient. Calming is not immediate, the period to calm down is long. It is not advisable to lie down, except for the first two or three days. If the relief from pain occurs immediately, this is not a good thing", according to the doctor.
How can we prevent disc herniation or vertebral movement?
"We cannot directly affect the bones, but the muscles. With regular exercises, we must strengthen the muscles of the abdomen and back so as not to damage the column", said the doctor.
With disc herniation, there are also young people who attend the gym, even 16-17 years old.
"They don't do the preparatory phase in the gym. They emphasize the arm muscles to look aesthetically beautiful, but do not work the abdominal or back muscles. As well as lifting weights, damaging the column", said Seferi./TCH
