A cancer patient promised not to leave the square, while citizens demanded the resignation of the government, the protection of national assets, and civic organization against injustice.
The 18th civic protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office was accompanied by strong calls against the government and messages demanding political change, the protection of the public interest, and a new model for Albania.
One of the most emotional moments of the rally was the speech of a citizen who has been battling cancer for three years. He stated that he had not come out to protest for mercy, but for justice, and announced that from this day forward he would remain in front of the Prime Minister's Office until, according to him, the voice of the citizens is heard.
" Today I am not here to ask for mercy, but for justice. We have been protesting for 18 days. I am speaking to you as a person who has been fighting cancer for three years, while my soul is fighting an even bigger cancer, corruption and destruction ," he said.
The citizen called on Albanians not to remain indifferent and to join the protest, warning that he would remain in the square day and night.
" From today I will not leave this square. I will be here day and night until our voice is heard. Either we stand up, or tomorrow it will be too late ," he declared.
Among the protesters, a pensioner also spoke, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama of the country's depopulation and the dire economic situation of the elderly.
He said that pensions in Albania remain among the lowest and that the massive exodus of Albanians is damaging the country's future.
" Today I call on Albanians to call intellectuals and idealists who have been tested before this anti-national regime. Pensioners have lower pensions than in Africa. Edi Rama has cut off the roots of the nation by committing genocide with the departure of Albanians ," he said.
Another protester presented some concrete proposals for organizing the civic movement, arguing that the protest should be transformed into a sustainable structure that monitors power and reacts to any injustice.
According to him, national assets, lands and the coast are being treated as private property, while citizens are losing control over the country's territory and resources.
" The lands and the coast are being treated as loot, but they are ours. The territory is common property and we must not lose control over it ," he declared.
The protester demanded the government's resignation and proposed the creation of a National Citizens' Union, which would be established whenever public interests are violated.
" Today, a step is needed that turns the people's energy into an alternative. We demand the resignation of this government. Albania does not need individuals who complain, but people who know how to act together. No one will change Albania for us, we must do it ourselves ," he said.
The protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office continues to gather citizens from different age groups and backgrounds, while organizers insist that the movement has now gone beyond the boundaries of opposing the project in Zvërnec and has become a broader cause against the government and the Albanian political class. Among the chants that dominated today were "Rama go away", "Rama in prison", "Berisha in prison", "You have come to the end" and "New Albania".
