In the first five months of this year, 56 lives have been taken prematurely, not from illness or accidents, but from an invisible pain that often passes in silence.
Suicides are increasing at an alarming rate, following a tragic trajectory that last year marked 112 cases across the country. Behind every number lies an untold story, a cry that was never heard. And the question that arises is: are we doing enough to hear them?
"As a society, we have hidden mental health problems. Because at first we did not recognize them. Even when we recognized them, we stigmatized them and kept them secret within the family. When the problem is not exposed, it grows to the point that the person can no longer bear it," says Aurela Agalliu, psychologist.
Just last week, 3 serious cases were recorded in our country, where the victims were 3 young people from Pogradec and Korça, and the most recent case was recorded in Tirana, where a still unidentified young man jumped to his death from the terrace of the student city.
In conditions where the role of the psychologist in our society is not very consolidated, the emphasis is placed on the family circle so that they do not neglect any signs in the behavior of their relatives.
"When a change in a person's behavior has occurred, it should be taken to a psychologist, and positive propaganda should be made. Keep close. Don't ignore the signs. We are a society that is becoming very individualistic. Individualism has killed people," Agalliu adds.
In a society that suffers in silence, every life lost to suicide is an alarm that should not be ignored. When institutions are lacking, when the psychologist is seen as a stigma and not as a support, the burden falls on family, on friends, on every eye that sees and every ear that hears.
