The family of Judge Astrit Kalaja, who was killed in the premises of the Court of Appeal in Tirana, has requested that he be declared a "Martyr of the Homeland." The request was filed by his wife with state institutions, requesting the initiation of relevant procedures by the Ministry of Justice.

The documents published by "TCH" state that the judge, who had a 32-year career in the justice system, was killed in the line of duty, at the moment he was announcing the decision on behalf of the Republic.

"The judge was killed in the courtroom during the announcement of the verdict on behalf of the Republic, by a party to the proceedings who pulled out a gun and shot him immediately after the verdict was announced ," the family's request states.

The family members argue that order and security in the country are not guaranteed only by the police forces, but also by the justice institutions. They have warned that they will also address the Central Commission for the Status of Martyrs, which could pave the way for a legal process in the Administrative Court if the request is not taken into account.

Judge Astrit Kalaja was murdered by Elvis Shkëmbi, whose uncle was a party to a legal case that had been going on for several years in Shkodër. Currently, the two people suspected of involvement in this crime are in prison.

The investigations into the incident have not yet been closed, as the Tirana Prosecution Office is awaiting an expert examination of the phone of one of the suspects to determine whether there was collaboration between them in organizing the crime.

The murder of Judge Kalaja brought the issue of security in judicial institutions back into focus. There have been previous reports of threats against judicial personnel during the pronouncement of decisions, and in one of these cases, a court case has been opened against the suspected perpetrator. However, according to reports, security conditions in the courts remain unchanged.
