Prime Minister Edi Rama attended the Sustainable Development Week Summit in Abu Dhabi, highlighting digital progress in Albania, where 95% of services are provided online and artificial intelligence is used to harmonize laws with the EU. Rama also spoke about renewable energy, stating that Albania aims to sell green energy to Europe through a project worth over 1 billion euros with the United Arab Emirates and Italy.
In local politics, Sali Berisha announced a complaint to SPAK regarding the “Dorana Park” project, accusing the government and Prime Minister Rama of favoring the minority and mismanagement. Territorial reform remains blocked, despite the temporary agreement between the parties, while the DP and LDK continue to oppose participation in the committees. SPAK’s investigations into the financing of the Re-establishment Assembly and the CEZ-DIA issue continue, with Ilir Meta denying any legal violations and emphasizing that his legal income for the period 1995-2023 amounts to over 87 million new lek.
In justice, the trial for the Gërdec tragedy continues on January 22, with former minister Fatmir Mediu requesting verification of evidence and expertise. Natural events hit the areas of Lezha, where floods caused major damage to agricultural lands, while farmers are protesting for compensation. In Këlcyrë, a 30-year-old woman was raped by her family after a divorce dispute, leading to criminal proceedings against four people.
Crime and security are also in the spotlight with the escape of Altin Ndoc from Durrës Hospital, causing dismissals and transfers to high-security prisons. Meanwhile in Venezuela, authorities seized 6,850 kg of drugs, including cases linked to the Albanian mafia. On the international scene, tensions are rising: Iran warned the US of attacks on its bases in the region if it intervenes, while Elon Musk seeks full custody of his son, Romulus, after the controversy over the transgender community.
In sports, the Albanian Football Federation organizes the Electoral Assembly on February 16 to elect the President and Executive Committee, where Armand Duka aims for a new mandate, while Krenar Alimehmeti was elected president of the Regional Football Association.
