The Ministry of Justice has dismissed the director of Durres prison, Indrit Cerloj. The decision comes after the spectacular escape from Durres Hospital of detainee Altin Ndoci, one of the most controversial names in the underworld.
Earlier, four prison officials were arrested. Among those arrested are the deputy chief of prison police, Dezdemon Pazaj, an employee of the Prison Police, and head nurse Aulon Quku. They are accused of serious misconduct while accompanying Ndoc for a medical examination, by not informing either the prison director or the state police of the planned itinerary.
Initial investigations show that on January 13, 2026, Altin Ndoci had a medical consultation with the prison doctor, who recommended a visit to the surgeon at the Durrës Regional Hospital. The detainee was accompanied according to the specified itinerary: Durrës Penitentiary Institution – Durrës Regional Hospital – return to the Penitentiary Institution.
During medical treatment in the infectious disease ward, Ndoci asked to go to the toilet. Police officers escorted him, but he resisted and hit them, managing to escape.
An Audi A7 car was waiting in the parking lot, the license plates of which turned out to have been reported stolen a few days earlier. The perpetrators who helped Ndoc escape planned the plan in detail.
Following the incident, the director and the entire management chain of the detention facility have been suspended from duty.
Altin Ndoci was transferred to Durrës in 2020 and was on trial in the "Golden Bullet" case for the murder of Andi Zylyfi and the wounding of Ardit Uruci, as well as for murder on behalf of the criminal organization led by Franc and Hajdar Copja. Testimony from former prison directors is expected to be taken during the investigation to clarify responsibilities in this escape.
