Four deputy mayors of Tirana have resigned from their positions, 6 months after the arrest of Mayor Erion Veliaj.
Four deputy mayors of Tirana have resigned, a move ordered by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is now "de jure" the person leading the country's largest municipality following Veliaj's arrest.
It is learned that Frida Pashako, Andi Seferi, Keti Luarasi and Jonida Halili have been removed from their positions. Meanwhile, the four new deputy chairmen have been appointed: Ilir Mengra, Blendi Sula, Gentian Keri and Vasilika Vjero.
Anuela Ristani, the acting mayor of the Municipality, will continue her duties in the absence of Mayor Erion Veliaj, who is in prison.
We remind you that in mid-July, it was Prime Minister Edi Rama's order that, in a closed-door meeting held between Tirana's elected deputies and the directors of the Municipality, he requested a reorganization of the Municipality, based on the structure proposed by Tony Blair's (consulting) company.
According to this structure, the Municipality of Tirana will increase from 4 deputy mayors it currently has to 5, through a new selection process, where each one will have specific job profiles.
Contrary to what was previously reported, Rama has not requested the direct dismissal of the current vice presidents, but in the coming days, after the selection of new names, they will be invited to resign from office.
From these changes, Anuela Ristani, Rama's "appointee" who currently holds the position of Acting Mayor and not Deputy Mayor, was excluded.
